Steps to stay healthy this spring

Finally, spring has arrived in Sofia! The sun is brilliantly shining and the first signs of pretty pink blossoms are on the trees. As the tradition goes, it will soon be time to hang our red and white martenitsi on those blossoming trees, and that will be a sure sign that winter is well and truly over.

In April, the weather in Bulgaria gets slightly warmer as the days go by and the summer months draw near. Although temperatures are still quite mild at this time of year, there’s plenty of sunshine and only a small amount of rain during the month. Mild sunshine plus Mild rain triggers humidity and the same changes happen within our body. Our body tends to get slightly warmer and humid. Body begins to sweat. Mucous secretion increases in the body. This weakens digestive metabolism and may lead to diseases of the digestive system. It is also the time when the air may carry allergens such as pollen and dander. Also, disease-carrying insects become active as the temperature increases. All of these have a combined effect of making us sick. People with low immunity are particularly at risk of falling ill in spring.


Ayurveda recommends a few simple, yet very effective steps to prevent diseases, and stay healthy.


  1. Early morning exercises, after the sunrise, prevents a lot of diseases during spring season
  2. Fibre rich barley is adviced as breakfast cereal grain.
  3. Honey and Honey water is recommended as the best drink
  4. Herbs & Spices like cardamom, cinnamon, turmeric, cumin and garlic is advised.
  5. Suryanamaskar strengthens the immunity during spring season.
